Collections process
Employers’ premiums cover the cost of B.C.’s workplace injuries. If employers don't pay their premiums or under-report their assessable payroll, we may not have enough funds to cover the cost of claims, and premium rates can increase as a result.
Our collections department is responsible for collecting overdue receivables owed to WorkSafeBC, which may include assessment premiums, assessment-related penalties, overdue penalties, health and safety infraction penalties, and claim benefit overpayments. If you have an outstanding liability owing to WorkSafeBC, you may be contacted by one of our collection officers to discuss payment of the outstanding debt.
Some of the activities we may engage in, under collection-related provisions in the Workers Compensation Act, include:
- Claiming a statutory lien or priority for an overdue debt
- Obtaining a judgment without a court appearance
- Permitting collection of a debt from a third-party
- Attaching WorkSafeBC compensation benefits where appropriate
