WorkSafeBC Home Home

Every day, thousands of workers in British Columbia drive as part of their jobs. Remember that when you’re driving for work, your vehicle is your workplace.

Motor vehicle incidents (MVIs) are a leading cause of worker fatalities in the province. From 2016 to 2025, there were 214 work-related deaths in B.C. due to MVIs.

Everyone has a role to play in keeping commercial drivers safe on the roads:

  • Employers are responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy workplace for workers by complying with the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation and Workers Compensation Act.
  • Workers have the right to know about hazards, the right to participate in health and safety activities in the workplace, and the right to refuse unsafe work.

Prioritizing road safety

WorkSafeBC is partnering with the RCMP to help commercial drivers stay safe on the road. They are working together to ensure:

  • Drivers hold a valid licence and have been trained on the vehicle they are operating.
  • Everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seatbelt.
  • Vehicle inspections are up to date and documented, and deficiencies have been fixed.
  • Cargo is properly secured both inside and outside of the vehicle.
  • Drivers are focused on the road and not distracted.

Free workshops on commercial vehicle safety

The RCMP and WorkSafeBC are co-hosting two free workshops on commercial vehicle safety. Drivers and companies operating commercial vehicles that require a Class 5 licence, such as box trucks and delivery vehicles, are invited to attend.

The goal of the workshops is to refresh commercial vehicle operators and companies on important safety information and to answer any questions they may have.

Refreshments and BBQ included (sponsored by Road Safety at Work and Safety Driven).
