First aid

First aid roles and responsibilities

Everyone has a role to play in workplace first aid. Employers, prime contractors, first aid attendants, joint committees, worker representatives, and workers all need to know their roles and responsibilities.

Assess your first aid requirements

To identify the first aid requirements for your workplace, you need to conduct a first aid assessment. You must do an assessment annually and when workplace conditions change.

Meet your first aid requirements

There are specific requirements for first aid kits and equipment, facilities, attendants, procedures, transportation, and drills. Based on your first aid assessment, you can see which requirements your workplace needs to meet.

Training and certification for first aid attendants

All first aid attendants must have valid B.C. certification appropriate for their workplace and responsibilities. Certificates must be given by approved training providers.

Record first aid incidents

Whenever there is a first aid incident, you must create a record of it. If you have a first aid attendant, they will create this record. There are requirements around how to create, revise, store, and give access to these records.
