Asbestos abatement licensing now open
On January 1, 2024, new licensing requirements for B.C. asbestos abatement contractors will become mandatory. WorkSafeBC is now accepting applications for asbestos abatement licences — apply now to ensure you receive your licence in time.
We have provided a summary of requirements and the process for application below, but for more information and to apply, see the following on our website:
Who needs a licence?
Employers that offer asbestos abatement services to others in relation to a building will require a valid licence. Independent operators are not required to have a licence but may wish to apply so they can participate in work that requires a licensed asbestos abatement contractor.
For more information on the requirements, see our information for employers and independent operators on our website.
What you’ll need to apply for a licence
You will need to be registered with WorkSafeBC and have an online services account. The application process will take about 20 minutes, and there is no fee.
If you have outstanding assessments or administrative penalties, you should pay them immediately. Having amounts owing to WorkSafeBC may affect your application for an asbestos abatement licence.
Once your application has been approved
Licences last for one year and must be renewed annually.
Once your application is approved, you will be added to a public registry of licensed asbestos abatement contractors posted to worksafebc.com beginning this fall.
WorkSafeBC will conduct regular reviews and inspections of licensees to ensure compliance with licence requirements, as well as with the Workers Compensation Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation.
Apply for a licence as soon as possible
Applications can generally be processed within two to six weeks, but we expect a high volume of applications that may affect processing times. You should submit your application as soon as possible to ensure you are licensed by January 1, 2024.
