Media Backgrounder: Reducing harm to injured workers from opioid use

This backgrounder discusses WorkSafeBC’s programs, services and initiatives to reduce harm to injured workers from opioid use.

Some injured workers are prescribed opioids by their treating physician after a workplace injury. There are serious health risks posed by extended prescribing and over-use of opioids.

WorkSafeBC has adopted a harm-reduction strategy that focuses on preventing the chronic use of opioids and works with community physicians in providing individually developed treatment alternatives for workers with chronic pain and/or addiction issues.
