Oilfield driver training
In B.C., oilfield vehicle drivers must complete an approved training course before they can operate an oilfield vehicle. Learn more about the requirements below.
Where to get trained
In the oil and gas industry, if a vehicle has a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 5,500 kg (12,000 lbs), the driver must:
- Be certified in the Oilfield Driver Awareness (ODA) Course offered by Energy Safety Canada.
OR
- Have completed a driver training course equivalent to, or better than, the Energy Safety Canada course. Employers can use WorkSafeBC’s course-equivalency-comparison-grid-oil-and-gas-driver-training to evaluate another driver training course. Alternately, call WorkSafeBC Certification Services for assistance. In the Lower Mainland, call 604.276.3090. Outside the Lower Mainland, call our toll-free line at 1.888.621.7233.
