COVID-19 claims costs and your insurance premiums
WorkSafeBC has received a number of enquiries on how COVID-19 claims are treated for rate setting
On July 26, 2024, Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, rescinded all provincial orders related to COVID-19. As a result, there is no longer a presumption that COVID-19 infections are work-related. In light of this, for the 2026 rates, the costs related to COVID-19 claims with injury date on or after July 26, 2024, have been included in the 2026 cost rate calculation.
Similar to previous years, COVID-19 claims with injury date prior to July 26, 2024, have been excluded from the cost rate calculation. Historical costs related to accepted COVID-19 claims will continue to be funded by the rate group balances. Since all provincial orders related to COVID-19 have been rescinded, the COVID-19 claims with an injury date on or after July 26, 2024, are included in the experience rating calculation.
