BOD decision: Duration of benefits (retirement age)

Published on: December 14, 2023

On November 9, 2023, WorkSafeBC’s Board of Directors approved amendments to policy on WorkSafeBC’s determination of whether a worker “would retire” after the retirement dates set out in the Workers Compensation Act (Act). The amendments include policy guidance on the meaning of “would retire” in the Act and on determinations for workers who are 63 and over at the time of injury.

The amended policies apply to all decisions, including appellate decisions, made on or after January 1, 2024.

The Board of Directors approved these amendments in advance of stakeholder consultation. The Policy Regulation and Research Department plans to consult on these newly amended policies in early 2024, to determine whether further policy changes are necessary.
