Work-related whole-body vibration and Hip Osteoarthritis

In the 2017 Osteoarthritis and Occupational Activities Working Group that was sourced from the original systematic review and replicated in the published peer reviewed article. These documents stated that whole body vibration (WBV) provided a moderate level of evidence on the positive association with hip osteoarthritis (OA). This conclusion of moderate evidence of the positive association of WBV and hip OA was based on four primary studies quoted in both the original and the peer-reviewed article. Recently, a Medical Advisor at the Board, advising on a claim of potential exposure to WBV and the development of hip OA, appraised these four primary studies and came to a different conclusion with regard to the association of WBV and hip OA development. Hence, input from the EBPG was sought on this issue. Given the discrepancy, the EBPG decided to critically appraise the four primary studies as well as conducting its own systematic review on the (causal) association between exposure to WBV and development of hip OA.
