Farmworker Health and Safety: Challenges for British Columbia

Farm work is one of Canada’s most dangerous jobs, with occupational hazards ranging from exposure to carcinogens, repetitive motion and intense physical labour, risk of infectious diseases, poor sanitation and inadequate facilities at work. In B.C., thousands of farmworkers are immigrants from South Asia or, more recently, temporary migrants from Mexico, a factor which is likely to have implications for health and safety issues. Using a variety of research methods, this project explored how ethnicity and citizenship status affect health and safety issues in B.C.’s horticultural industry, and developed recommendations based on the study.
