Getting the message right: Strengthening return-to-work communication in B.C.’s health care sector
This study is an exploration of best practices for return to work (RTW) communication, seeking ways to integrate findings into specific recommendations and tools to inform work disability management. Through interviews with disability management stakeholders at Interior Health and WorkSafeBC - including supervisors, disability case managers, WorkSafeBC case managers, and RTW coordinators, as well as workers who have experienced occupational injury leading to absence - the researchers will seek a better understanding of how RTW messages are delivered, and how they influence worker perception of RTW and steps to re-enter work.
The objective is to identify the most and least effective approaches for RTW messaging, and develop strategies for personalizing communication with workers. Interview questions and analysis will be informed by research and existing theories, and the findings will be integrated into a tool kit.
