Developing a resource road driver alert system
This project will lead to the development of a system to alert drivers to the presence of an oncoming vehicle on resource roads. Developing a driver alert system would reduce risks that are inherent to logging roads, like obstacles and curves that prevent drivers from seeing oncoming traffic. An ideal technology would be able to detect an oncoming vehicle within 500 meters, in all terrain and environmental conditions, with an accuracy of 80-95%.
In the first phase of the study, researchers will assess existing technologies, determining if they can be adapted to develop a way to automatically notify drivers of oncoming traffic. A technology that will be evaluated involves a system that tracks other vehicles and automatically alerts drivers to oncoming traffic more than 500 meters away. In the second phase of the study, researchers will design, develop, and test original technological concepts.
