Consultation on the draft OHS guideline for storage racks

At their meeting in March 2017, WorkSafeBC’s Board of Directors (BOD) approved the new storage rack regulations coming into effect on January 1, 2018.

The BOD also requested WorkSafeBC to have the OHS guideline for storage racks be made available to stakeholders by August 1, 2017. To meet this deadline, the Regulatory Practices Department of WorkSafeBC is asking for stakeholder feedback on the draft guideline for storage racks.

What is a guideline?

OHS guidelines are developed for specific sections of the Workers Compensation Act or Occupational Health and Safety Regulation to further WorkSafeBC’s prevention mandate by providing information to stakeholders. Guidelines cannot conflict with the requirements in the Act or the Regulation, but they are interpretive documents intended to assist in the application and interpretation of the requirements. They provide workplace parties with information about how compliance can be achieved under particular regulatory sections.

The proposed draft guideline covers three topic areas on which stakeholders have asked for further guidance during the regulatory development process for the storage rack regulations, as follows:

  • Application of the storage rack regulations
  • Qualified persons
  • Frequency of storage rack inspections
