Crane operator certification

In B.C., crane operators must have a certificate that's acceptable to WorkSafeBC in order to operate cranes in any of the three general crane categories (boom trucks, mobiles, and tower cranes). Here you'll find important information about certification.

Get certified in B.C.

In B.C., crane operator certification is administered through the BC Association for Crane Safety (BC Crane Safety). Visit BC Crane Safety to learn more about certifying as a BC crane operator.

Certificates issued in B.C. by previous regulatory bodies are recognized, so no further testing or assessment is required. However, operators must still register with BC Crane Safety and have their certificates verified.

Crane operators from out of province

Crane operators with a crane trade qualification ─ including those with a Red Seal endorsement issued by a regulatory authority in another province or territory in Canada ─ require no further testing or assessment. As a crane operator, however, you must:

  1. Register with BC Crane Safety to have your certificate verified.
  2. Familiarize yourself with regulatory requirements and safe work practices that apply to crane operator certification in B.C.

Crane operator competency profile charts

Competency profile charts for crane operators who operate boom truck, mobile, and tower cranes are available from BC Crane Safety. The charts are designed to help crane operators and employers meet the requirements for operating cranes in B.C., and they form the foundation for your practical assessment.
