New bulletin shares how to work safely with sulfur dioxide in wineries

Published on: August 17, 2023

Sulfur dioxide and KMS are frequently used as disinfectants and preservatives in wineries, cideries, and meaderies. Unsafe handling of these substances can result in serious injury or death.

Working safely with sulfur dioxide and KMS in wineries discusses the hazards and how to reduce the risks. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) may be used directly in its gaseous form, or indirectly via KMS solutions, at several stages of the winemaking process. The bulletin describes controls that can reduce exposure for both forms. It also offers tips on KMS handling and storage.
