What workers need to know

No two people recover from an injury at the same time in the same way. But people who return to their workplace as soon as it is safe to do so are able to use work as part of their therapy. As a result, they usually have a faster recovery.

The benefits of recovering at work

You don't have to be fully recovered before returning to your workplace. Actively participating in a recovery-at-work plan can help you get better faster.

You'll get many other benefits from staying at work, or returning to work as soon as possible. Some of those benefits include:

  • Preventing other health complications by staying active
  • Maintaining your income and employment benefits, which provides stability for you and your family
  • Maintaining social contact with your co-workers and your workplace
  • Maintaining job security by staying in contact with your employer

Steps you can take

If you're injured at work, report your injury to your employer, see your health care provider as needed, and then report your injury to us. You can help your recovery by:

  1. Taking an active role
  2. Remember, it takes teamwork between you, your employer, and your health care provider(s).

  3. Talking to your employer about what you can do at work
  4. Your employer may have some modified duties or alternate work that you could do temporarily during your recovery. It's important to focus on what you can do. Use this information to create a plan with your employer.

  5. Taking your plan to your health care provider(s) as soon as possible
  6. They may be able to make some recommendations based on what activities you can safely do.

  7. Asking your health care provider(s) to contact your employer if they have any questions
  8. Your recovery is a collaboration between you, your employer and your health care provider(s).

  9. Keeping in touch with your employer
  10. If you're away from work, call regularly about your progress and about duties that you could do as you move toward recovery. Ask about participating in training or other staff events. If you're working, make sure your employer knows how you're doing and if adjustments are needed to your duties or plan.

  11. Keeping in touch with your co-workers
  12. Even if you're not at work, staying connected with what's happening at the workplace helps your recovery.
