New risk advisory outlines how to avoid counterfeit products when sourcing respirators during a supply shortage

Published on: July 15, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a global supply shortage for approved respirators. If you are purchasing equivalent respirators, ensure you are purchasing from a legitimate source, and know what to look for to avoid counterfeits.

Update (July 7, 2021): This risk advisory has been removed as it is no longer relevant.

When purchasing alternatives to NIOSH-approved respirators or respirators marketed as NIOSH-approved, make sure to exercise extreme caution to ensure that the product meets standards for adequately protecting workers.

Our new risk advisory, Risks associated with sourcing N95 respirators or acceptable equivalents during a supply shortage, discusses the acceptable standards for respirators, the risks associated with buying equivalent respirators, and the steps you can take to ensure that the respirators you provide for your workers protect them as intended.
