2001/03/02-02

THE WORKERS' COMPENSATION BOARD OF BRITISH COLUMBIA

RESOLUTION OF THE PANEL OF ADMINISTRATORS

Re: Amendment to policy in Item R33.14-1 in the Prevention Manual

WHEREAS:

Pursuant to Section 82 of the Workers Compensation Act ("Act"), RSBC 1996, Chapter 492 and amendments thereto, the Panel of Administrators ("Panel") must approve and superintend the policies and direction of the Workers’ Compensation Board ("Board"), including policies respecting compensation, assessment, rehabilitation and occupational safety and health, and must review and approve the operating policies of the Board;

AND WHEREAS:

Item R33.14-1 (Occupational First Aid – General Requirements – Blood and Body Fluid Precautions) sets out POLICY with respect to section 33.14 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation;

AND WHEREAS:

The POLICY states that an appropriate barrier cream is a suitable alternative to latex or other waterproof gloves in providing protection to first aid attendants exposed to blood or body fluids;

AND WHEREAS:

The Panel has been advised that this statement is medically incorrect;

THE PANEL OF ADMINISTRATORS RESOLVES THAT:

  1. The following statement is deleted from the POLICY in Item R33.14-1 of the Prevention Manual:

    Some individuals are allergic to latex or the powder on latex gloves or are allergic to the material in waterproof gloves. In this case, gloves may be replaced with an appropriate barrier cream for this purpose.

  2. This resolution is effective March 12, 2001.

DATED at Richmond, British Columbia, March 2, 2001.

By the Workers' Compensation Board

  MAUREEN NICHOLLS, CHAIR
