The Panel approved an amendment to the Fishing Industry Regulations to broaden the base of assessments in the fish harvesting industry.
The purpose of the amendment is to make assessments in the fish harvesting industry more equitable by distributing the cost of fishers compensation coverage among a broader range of fishing industry participants.
When the amendment takes effect in January 2001, the Board will collect assessments on fish bought by, or sold to people and organizations that are not registered to buy fish commercially in British Columbia. More specifically, the Board will collect assessments from persons or organizations that transmit payments to BC commercial fishers. The Boards Administration is developing policy guidelines to help identify specific persons and groups in the fishing industry that the policy change will affect.
