Policy decisions made at the July 16, 1998 WCB Panel of Administrators meeting

The following is a list of policy decisions made by the WCB Panel of Administrators on July 16, 1998. For information about the function and mandate of the Panel, please see Governing Structure.

Code R

Continuity of income benefits (Code R) are paid to injured workers who are experiencing a loss of income while waiting for the WCB to assess and implement their permanent pension. The Panel amended the policy on continuity of income benefits to clarify the rate at which these benefits are paid and the circumstances in which the rate can be changed. This amendment is effective September 1996.The Panel also amended the same policy to make continuity of income benefits available to workers who have returned to work while awaiting their pension assessment and to workers whose existing pensions are being reassessed. In both situations, to qualify for these benefits, the worker must be experiencing a reduction in income related to the compensable disability. These amendments are effective July 16, 1998.

Payment of public trustee and committee fees

The Panel approved a new policy that allows the WCB to pay the fees charged to a worker by the Public Trustee or Committee for managing the worker's entire estate. Policy #49.30 of the Rehabilitation Services and Claims Manual allows the WCB to pay these fees where the worker's inability to manage his or her own affairs results from a work-related injury or disease. An objective of workers' compensation is to provide adequate compensation to workers who have suffered work-related injuries. Payment of the Public Trustee and Committee fees under the new policy will ensure that workers receive the benefits they're entitled to under the Act.
