Policy decisions finalized at the March, 2007 WorkSafeBC Board of Directors meetings

The following resolutions were finalized by WorkSafeBC's (the WCB) Board of Directors in March 2007. For information about the function and mandate of the Board of Directors, please see Governing Structure.

Recurrence of Mental Stress

At its meeting on March 20, 2007, the Board of Directors approved amendments to policy item #13.30, Mental Stress, of Volume II of the Rehabilitation Services & Claims Manual, to remove a sentence regarding recurrence of mental stress. This policy change applies to all decisions, including appellate decisions, made on or after April 1, 2007.

Contractor Liability and Statutory Liens

The Board of Directors has approved amendments to WorkSafeBC’s policies pertaining to the clearance system, as provided in Assessment Manual items AP1-51-1 Contractor Liability and AP1-52-1 Statutory Lien. AP1-51-1 and AP1-52-1 were amended to clarify the clearance system, specifically the function of clearance letters and the importance of the clearance date.

The amended policy comes into effect on May 1, 2007 and applies to all clearance letter requests on or after that date.

Recognition of Bursitis, Tendinitis and Tenosynovitis as Occupational Diseases

The Board of Directors has approved amendments to the Occupational Disease Recognition Regulation and consequential amendments to Rehabilitation Services & Claims Manual, Vol. II, policy item #26.03: Recognition by Regulation of General Application. These amendments confirm that WorkSafeBC recognizes bursitis, tendinitis and tenosynovitis, other than the forms of these diseases listed in Schedule B, as occupational diseases. WorkSafeBC continues to be required to adjudicate the work-relatedness of these diseases on a case-by-case basis.

The amendments come into effect on August 14, 2007.
