New Occupational Exposure Limits for 2006

Section 5.48 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation provides that, except as otherwise determined by WorkSafeBC, a worker’s exposure to a hazardous chemical substance must not exceed the occupational exposure limits established by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (“ACGIH”). An exposure limit is the maximum allowed airborne concentration for a particular substance. WorkSafeBC Policy R5.48-1 provides a list of exceptions where it has been determined that a specific limit established by the ACGIH is not appropriate for adoption in British Columbia.

Each year, the ACGIH publishes a list of substances for which they have set new occupational exposure limits. Attached is a list of these substances (PDF 40kb) and the corresponding new limits now in effect in B.C.

For your information, a complete list of all substances and their corresponding exposure limits can be found in Guideline G5.48-1, and the table of occupational exposure limits for excluded substances only, in Policy R5.48-1.

If you have any comments or concerns about the new occupational exposure limits, please forward them to WorkSafeBC by July 31, 2006.
