Occupational Injuries by Accident Type and Occupation in British Columbia, 1997-2006

Occupational Injuries by Accident Type and Occupation tables provide statistical information on occupational injuries in B.C., 1997-2006. Injuries are categorized by the type of accident that led to the injury, as well as the occupation of the injured person. The tables include claim counts by gender, as well as statistics on average age, complete duration, and rate of injury.

Injuries included in the report were accepted for short term disability benefits, long term disability benefits, or survivor benefits, either in the year of injury or the following year. The injuries included for year of injury 2006 are those accepted in 2006 or in the first 10 months of 2007. This means the counts for injury year 2006 are slightly less complete than the counts for other years but, for all practical purposes, are on the same basis.

About the 1997-2006 tables

When accessing the tables, please keep the following points in mind:

  • “Short-term disability” (STD) has replaced the term “wage loss,” and “long term disability” (LTD) has replaced the term “permanent disability.” Claims not coded to accident type or occupation have been proportionately allocated to the accident type and occupation categories.
  • When comparing the claim counts in this report to those in other WorkSafeBC reports, remember claims can be counted in different ways. For example, in the statistical supplement to the 2006 Annual Report, Statistics 2006, claims are counted by the year the first benefit was awarded, rather than by year of injury.
  • The injury rate calculations in Table 1C are approximate. The estimates of person years are calculated by combining information on total employment by occupation from the Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey, with estimates of WorkSafeBC-covered person years of employment.
  • Tables 9A to 9J provide claim counts at the most detailed levels of occupation and accident type. Data is shown for all occupations with any short term disability injuries between 1997 and 2006.
