Safety lessons in construction

Lack of safety resources and awareness in small-scale construction operations puts workers at a high risk of injury. Workers are often young, lacking in the necessary skills, untrained, or transient, and construction employers are often independent and nomadic, with minimal safety knowledge.

Statistics

  • Of the 38,267 construction companies registered with WorkSafeBC, 36,000 have 10 employees or fewer
  • Falls are the main source of injury on a construction site (caused by inadequate guarding or inadequate use of fall protection, slips off roofs, and drops from ladders)
  • Falls racked up $229 million in claim costs between 2004 and 2008
