December retail workers face particular safety risks

With the increase of consumer spending over the holidays, many retail employers need to hire additional entry-level employees.  Because these employees are beginning their jobs at the busiest time of year, some employers may take shortcuts with safety training. However, many temporary retail employees are new and young workers, making proper training essential.

In 2010, retail workplace accidents* accounted for over 2,500 injury claims. The majority of claims were related to overexertion, being struck by objects, and falls.

Statistics

  • All retail injuries make up 15 percent of claims for female workers, and 9 percent for male workers
  • From 2006 to 2010*:
    • There were almost 15,000 claims for retail workers
    • Retail claims costs totalled almost 55 million dollars
    • Retail claims resulted in over 500,000 days lost from work
