Emergency communications

To help connect employees and deliver important alerts during a major disaster, WorkSafeBC’s Information Technology Division developed an innovative technology that has now garnered international interest.

A Vancouver-based company specializing in emergency communications, BizSafe, is marketing the software on behalf of WorkSafeBC to other businesses worldwide.

The software takes the form of a website that staff log on to from any location during a major disaster. There they can relay messages to managers about the welfare of their families, their current locations, contact information, and availability for work. Managers can send out corporate, divisional or personal messages to staff, and communicate the business continuity plan.

The version developed by WorkSafeBC for its employees is called the Emergency Communications Contact Centre (ECCC). Toll-free phone access to the service is also available if any employees are unable to access a computer during a disaster.

At a recent data centre conference in Las Vegas, IT research and advisory company Gartner Inc. expressed interest in WorkSafeBC’s software for its ease of deployment, ease of use, and affordability.

Locally, ICBC uses WorkSafeBC’s ECCC application for its workforce. The provincial auto insurance company participated in a pilot project to see how well the WorkSafeBC application could be adapted for other organizations.
