Asbestos in our environment

Last September, the City of Abbotsford removed approximately 3,500 tonnes of river sludge mixed with asbestos from multiple sites on the Sumas River. A WorkSafeBC officer was on hand to review the work procedures during the cleanup, and advise accordingly. The cleanup took 17 days and cost the city $135,000.

Quick facts

  • Asbestos becomes airborne when the soil is disturbed around the river bank
  • Asbestos in Sumas is a danger to the local farming community
  • Inhaling asbestos causes asbestosis (a chronic lung disease) and mesothelioma (a cancer of the chest cavity)
