Three B.C. workers die from ladder falls

In one week in May 2011, three B.C. workers died after falling from ladders. Though these incidents are currently being investigated, this tragic cluster of fatalities highlights the potential danger of familiar equipment like ladders, and how a fall —even from a low height— can result in serious injuries and even death.

In the last decade there have been 9,403 injuries due to ladder falls in B.C. More than half were serious injuries and 13 were fatalities.

The sector with the highest number of accepted injury claims for falls from ladders is construction, but a closer look at the statistics reveals that ladder falls are a concern in many other industry areas — such as retail stores, orchards, and building management.

For 10-year statistics on ladder falls, a list of industries with the highest number of ladder fall claims, and links to safety resources, see this Ladder Safety Fact Sheet.
