WorkSafeBC’s injury rate measures the number of claims per 100 person-years of employment. This rate allows for year-to-year comparisons despite fluctuations in levels of employment.
The overall provincial injury rate is estimated at 2.3 for 2010 – a record low that continues a steady decrease in recent years.
Though higher than the provincial rate, injury rates for general and heavy construction have remained relatively steady or decreased despite the unprecedented growth in the construction sector in recent years. Note: 2010 injury rates for these sectors are not yet available.
The number of fatal claims in construction has tended to increase over the past 20 years, due largely to deaths from occupational diseases — mostly from asbestos exposures that occurred decades ago.
In 2010, there were 32 deaths in construction, 19 of which were due to occupational disease.
In 2009, 17 of 29 deaths in construction were due to occupational diseases.
