At home or work — think safe, be safe says WorkSafeBC

Richmond, B.C., February 21, 2006 — “Safe behaviour starts at home” is the theme for WorkSafeBC’s participation in the BC Home and Garden Show, February 22 to 26.

“We want to create a generation of safe workers,” said Don Nelson about the safety information presented at the WorkSafeBC booth at the Home Show. “Safety is all about having the right attitude — not only on the job, but doing work around the home too.”

Annual participation in the Home Show is part of WorkSafeBC’s commitment to increase everyone’s awareness that work-related injuries are preventable and not an inevitable part of working, and that working and playing safely at home will help instill a habit of thinking safely in all aspects of our lives.

Information on how to use different ladder types safely, how to select fall protection for working at heights, and how to recognize asbestos hazards in demolition, renovation, and salvage will be available in English, Punjabi, and Chinese at WorkSafeBC’s booth. All of these activities are common while working around the house and are a normal part of many workers’ daily routine.

Nelson offered this caution to homeowners attending the show looking for ideas on renovating, “Make sure the contractor you hire is registered with WorkSafeBC. If he’s not you could be on-the-hook for the cost of any injury to a worker on your property.” WorkSafeBC has published bulletins outlining how to choose a contractor and how to check that the company is registered for coverage.

Serving nearly two million workers and more than 179,000 employers, WorkSafeBC – the Workers’ Compensation Board, is a provincial statutory agency governed by a Board of Directors and funded by employers. WorkSafeBC was born out of a compromise between BC’s workers and employers in 1917 where workers gave up the right to sue their employers or fellow workers for injuries on the job in return for a no-fault insurance program fully paid for by employers. WorkSafeBC is committed to a safe and healthy workplace and to providing return-to-work rehabilitation and legislated compensation benefits to workers injured as a result of their employment.
