Bentall memorial: Remembering four workers lost in a tragic workplace accident

On January 7, 2005, the BC Federation of Labour held a memorial ceremony in downtown Vancouver to commemorate one of B.C.'s most high profile industrial accidents. Twenty-four years earlier — at noon on January 7, 1981 — four construction workers fell to their death when the fly-form they'd been working on collapsed, tumbling 36 floors to the street below.

The memorial ceremony remembered and honoured those workers — and the 150 or so workers who die every year from workplace injury or disease. Speakers included:

  • Larry Campbell, Vancouver mayor, who was coroner at the time of the incident
  • Two sons of one of the deceased workers
  • Don Nelson, WCB manager of Construction Industry Services
  • Jim Sinclair, president of the BC Federation of Labour
  • Wayne Peppard, executive director of the BC & Yukon Building and Trades Council
