Young workers 2002

Focusing on the retail industry

This summer, thousands of young British Columbians will leave school to start summer jobs or enter the workforce permanently. Young workers share one thing in common – they are at high risk of being injured at work.

In fact every working day 42 young workers are injured on the job, and workers aged 15 to 24 are at a greater risk of injury on the job than any other age group in this province.

The three industries where young workers are injured the most are also the three largest employers of young people – restaurants, supermarkets, and general retail. This year we've partnered with Retail B.C., the Retail Council of Canada, and the Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors to focus on the safety of young workers in the retail sector.

The WCB has a wide range of resources available to help young people and their employers create safe workplaces. The Young Worker Centre includes stories of young workers, a provincial overview, and a poster for young workers.
