Focus firms committed to workplace safety

The Focus Firm Strategy is a WCB Prevention initiative aimed at reducing the injury rate. Our Prevention Division identifies employers who are experiencing higher-than-average injury rates, and large employers where the volume of injuries is significant. The WCB works with these firms in a structured four-step program of injury reduction.

Four-step program

  1. Planning
  2. Compliance and Education
  3. Evaluation
  4. Maintenance

The firms are often from high-risk industries and identified by the WCB as needing extra help with identified workplace hazards and improving health and safety. The identified firm may also be regionally significant or have a high number of young workers. As of June 30, 2001, there are 368 focus firms in B.C.

In 1999 – the first full year of strategy operation – the number of injuries within the participating firms dropped by 13 percent. In 2000, there was a further drop in injuries of 7 percent, despite the addition of many new firms. Time-loss claims as of May 2001 show an average drop of 9.4 percent.
