Chiropractors and WorkSafeBC

Pursuant to section 21 of the Workers Compensation Act, WorkSafeBC has implemented a new Chiropractic Services Memorandum of Agreement effective May 28, 2007. This Agreement includes 3 schedules, Schedule A - Description of Services, Schedule B - Fee Schedule and Schedule C - Privacy Protection Schedule.

Chiropractors are not required to sign this Agreement. All chiropractors providing treatment to injured workers are deemed to have accepted the terms of the Chiropractic Services Memorandum of Agreement regardless of their status with the BC Chiropractic Association. Chiropractors not wishing to accept the terms of the Agreement should not provide treatment to injured workers.

Injured workers may contact Health Care Services at 604 232-7877 or toll free at 1 866 244-6404 for assistance in finding a Chiropractor.

To verify the status of a claim

Call the WorkSafeBC Claims Call Center to determine if a claim has been submitted and accepted.

Highlights of new Agreement include:

  • Increased visit fees over the term of the agreement, subject to achievement of network-wide return-to-work outcomes.
  • Visit fees will only be paid upon receipt of the Form 8C (Chiropractor's First Report).
  • Visit fees are inclusive of any and all supplies provided to the injured worker. As such, the previous “Items under $50” list and invoice has been discontinued.
  • Effective June 2, 2008, all reports and invoices must be submitted electronically.
  • Workers who attend for work-related injuries may elect to have treatment to areas other than the accepted injured area on the WorkSafeBC claim. The chiropractor may charge a fee where treatment is provided to areas other than to the accepted area of injury on a claim. Prior to treatment, the worker must acknowledge his/her understanding that the fee for treatment to areas not accepted on the claim is his/her responsibility and will not be reimbursed by WorkSafeBC.

Length of treatment

In cases where chiropractic treatment is expected to exceed four consecutive weeks, a Form 11C (Chiropractor's Progress Report) must be submitted to WorkSafeBC by the end of the fourth week with a plan for clinical recovery and return-to-work or alternate recommendations for further treatment. Payment cannot be processed beyond the initial four weeks of treatment until a Form 11C (Chiropractor's Progress Report) is received.

If chiropractors recommend treatment beyond eight weeks, the worker's file will be reviewed by a WorkSafeBC medical advisor (MA) to determine if further chiropractic treatment is appropriate. The MA may discuss the file with WorkSafeBC's chiropractic consultant in order to make that determination.
