Margaret Smithson

Senior Nurse Advisor
Nelson, B.C.

“As a nurse advisor, I get involved in claims very early on, looking at recovery and return-to-work planning for injured workers, sometimes even before a claim entitlement decision is made. I provide care and compassion and develop recovery and return-to-work plans that treat every client as an individual.

Nurse advisors work with workers, employers, and health care providers to make sure that everything that can be done for an injured worker is done. There’s a lot of independence and flexibility — I can choose to go out for a work-site visit if I think it’s necessary, and I can get involved in educating physicians, employers, and workers.

In my role as senior nurse advisor, I also provide orientation to new nurse advisors, and act as a resource and mentor to all nurse advisors.

At WorkSafeBC, you’re truly part of a team and you’re valued for your role on the team. Most importantly, I feel like my contributions are valued by all stakeholders: Those within WorkSafeBC, and the workers, employers, and health care providers I work with.

I’d recommend WorkSafeBC because the work is very interesting; it’s an exciting place to work, and you get to interact with and meet a lot of different people to really make a difference.”
