1150-20 B 1997
(97GA-01)

Issue:

Promotion of collaborative action among employers, unions, workers and service providers to reduce the impact of disabling workplace injuries, by provision of introductory training in disability management throughout BC.

Agency:

BC Institute of Technology - Occupational Health & Safety

Representative:

Mr. Lars Larsson

Funding:

$50,000

Context: Disability Management (DM) provides a promising development for reducing the impact of workplace injuries. Various options for training DM skills have been developed and delivered in BC and elsewhere. However, a low cost, widely available introduction to DM has not been available in BC.

Objective: To develop and test an introductory DM curriculum suitable for widespread use in the community college education network; to enable greater community access to DM skills by workplace personnel and service providers.

Design: Educational curriculum development; single group student satisfaction evaluation for feedback and curriculum editing.

Setting: Community college; students from college occupational health and safety programs and vocational rehabilitation practitioners.

Subjects: Literature review; 24 students in initial course offering.

Main Outcome Measures: Production of a 39-hour instructional curriculum, materials, activities, and handouts for an introductory DM course.

Results: Thorough and extensive DM curriculum materials were produced, used in an initial one-semester course, evaluated and edited. The DM topics covered included:

  • Overview of Disability Management
  • Legislation, Regulation, Policies and Ethics that Determine the DM Environment
  • Understanding Workplace Health, Safety and Disability
  • Evidence Based Practices in DM
  • Professional Practices in Health, Safety and Rehabilitation
  • Rehabilitation and Return to Work
  • Types of Assessments and Treatments
  • Negotiation Skills
  • How to Carry Out DM in a Firm
  • Labour - Management Relationships in DM
  • Case Management
  • Summary
  • All lecture transparencies, review

Conclusion: The DM curriculum materials developed are a valuable basis for introductory training in DM, suitable for educational use throughout BC.
