In the sawmill industry from 1990 to 1994, 13.9 percent of amputation injuries involved employees working around planers.
Northern Interior Forest Training Initiative (NIFTI) developed a one-day training course to address safety issues around planers. The project used a variety of methods to evaluate the effectiveness of the training program, including questionnaire, one-on-one interview, and statistical review on first aids, medical aids, and lost time accidents.
The study results show that the course increased workers’ safety awareness and changed their attitude toward workplace safety. Some of the trainees implemented new procedures on the job due to the course content. In the six months after the course, the number of accidents decreased compared to the number in the 12 months prior to the course. The study concludes that this course did make a positive difference and was worthwhile for those who participated. Refreshers may contribute to continuing success.
