WorkSafeBC seeks to benefit all citizens of British Columbia by promoting occupational health and safety and protecting workers and other persons present at workplaces from work related risks to their health and safety. To help improve health and safety in the forest industry, WorkSafeBC recently launched the pilot phase of its Forest Compliance Strategy. This program seeks to involve all forestry stakeholders in sharing responsibility and accountability for occupational health and safety through education, consultation and increased enforcement.
As part of the pilot program, WorkSafeBC officers conducted inspections at 300 forestry worksites across the province during the first three months of the 2006. These inspections went beyond routine regulatory matters, as officers spent more time examining important issues such as ensuring that health and safety programs and plans were in place and functioning, ascertaining appropriate levels of supervision and training, and identifying lines of accountability and responsibility for site safety.
As a result, over 600 orders were issued against employers, which is indicative of an employer's failure to comply with the Act or the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation. However, in all cases, employers have a right to appeal orders to the Review Division. Requests for review must be made within 90 days of the date in which the order was received.
Set out below is a list of the employers who received orders during the pilot phase of the Forest Compliance Strategy, and particulars about the violation. Orders that have been complied with as of August 25, 2006 have been removed from the list.
