Young Workers

Workers under the age of 25 make up 14 percent of B.C.'s workforce, or about 300,000 workers. Every workday in the province, 38 young workers are injured on the job, with 50 percent of injuries occurring in the first six months of work. Last year, 151 young workers were seriously injured.

By focusing prevention efforts on young workers, WorkSafeBC will help to cultivate a safe generation of workers who understand occupational hazards and will be aware of their right to demand safety in the workplace.

Demand Safety Campaign - Launched in June 2006, this graphic and shocking campaign grabs the attention of young workers through radio ads, posters and a youth-oriented website, www.demandsafety.ca

Young Worker Awareness Sessions - Throughout April and June 2006, WorkSafeBC hosted eight Young Worker Awareness sessions throughout the province. These sessions brought together local employers, training providers, unions and other stakeholders in order to raise awareness on the specific training, orientation and supervision that young workers need.
